Birthday Bike Mitts

It’s February 17th which means that it’s both my sister’s birthday and Micheal Jordan’s birthday. For this very reason, my sister has always been a Bulls fan. In later years, she also developed a love for bikes. With those two interests combined, I stumbled upon the perfect gift recipe. Black and red RAGBRAI Mittens!

High five!

With a customized twist! I added her initials to the fingertips “K” for Kate and “M” for McDougal. I found my previous attempt at this pattern was a bit too big for delicate lady hands, so I went with Wool of the Andes Sport in Coal and Red on size 4 needles. This was a perfect adjustment – these were nice and snug without being too tight.

On the flip side!

I also experimented with conductive thread by sewing it into the right finger and thumb area. And it worked! So not only are these customized, they’re also texting gloves – a real value-add for a millenial on the go 🙂

So, Happy birthday, Kate and long live the RAGBRAI mitten pattern.
